December 5, 2024, marks a significant milestone in Vietnam’s technology landscape as Nvidia Corporation officially inaugurated its Research and Development (R&D) center in Hanoi. This event not only underscores Nvidia’s strong commitment to the Vietnamese market but also paves the way for significant advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and high-tech industries.

At the ceremony for signing agreements with the Vietnamese government on establishing two AI centers, Jensen Huang, Founder and CEO of Nvidia, stated: “Today is a significant milestone and a joyous day for Nvidia. We are announcing the launch of Nvidia Vietnam, a major R&D center focusing on artificial intelligence, software, and system technology.”

Huang recalled Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s visit to Nvidia’s headquarters in the U.S. in September last year, attributing today’s achievements to a long process of collaboration and preparation. He shared: “With immense passion and enthusiasm, the Prime Minister convinced me that Vietnam should be Nvidia’s future home. The people and opportunities in Vietnam are ideal for investment.”

As the tech industry undergoes a “reset” with the rapid rise of AI, Huang noted that this is the perfect time for Vietnam to shape its AI-driven future. He emphasized: “AI learns from available data, so Vietnam must regard data as a national resource. Vietnam’s AI should be processed, built, and operated here, for its people and industries.”

To boost the AI industry in Vietnam, Nvidia’s CEO proposed three main initiatives: building AI infrastructure, developing talent, and fostering a startup ecosystem. He praised the strengths of the Vietnamese workforce in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), highlighting the abundance of software engineers. “The R&D center is our way of training a significant number of AI researchers in Vietnam,” he said. Huang expressed confidence that with infrastructure, support from companies like Nvidia, and government incentives, Vietnam could create a vibrant and dynamic AI startup ecosystem.

Huang shared his vision: “I believe that one day, when people talk about Vietnam, besides its culture, people, cuisine, and agriculture, they will also mention a technologically advanced nation. Thank you for welcoming us to Vietnam and making it Nvidia’s home. Today marks our birth here.”

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh commended this partnership, describing it as a critical milestone demonstrating Jensen Huang’s strong determination and commitment to making Vietnam Nvidia’s “second home.” The Prime Minister stressed the spirit of “say it, do it; commit and deliver; deliver with tangible results.”

Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung also recognized this event as “a historic turning point for Vietnam,” marking a new direction for Nvidia and positioning Vietnam as a leading AI research and development hub in Asia. He noted: “The centers will not only play a pivotal role in supporting AI research and applications, driving innovation and startups, but also create job opportunities for local talent.”

Nvidia’s decision to establish its R&D center in Vietnam reflects confidence in the country’s technological potential. It also offers Vietnam access to cutting-edge technologies, contributing to the growth of the domestic AI industry.

Earlier, in December 2023, Jensen Huang visited Vietnam, meeting with the Prime Minister and business leaders to discuss collaboration potential in semiconductors and AI. He expressed a desire to establish an Nvidia “stronghold” in Vietnam to attract talent and develop a robust tech ecosystem.

The establishment of Nvidia’s R&D center in Vietnam not only facilitates high-tech product development but also enhances human resource quality in the AI sector. This aligns with Vietnam’s Industry 4.0 strategy, which aims to build a digital economy and a smart society.

This event also creates opportunities for collaboration between Nvidia and Vietnamese tech companies, fostering entrepreneurship and innovation in AI. With support from the government and participation from leading tech corporations like Nvidia, Vietnam is poised to become a significant tech hub in the region and globally.

Nvidia’s official presence in Vietnam signifies a critical step forward in attracting foreign investment in high-tech sectors, affirming Vietnam’s position on the global technology map. This is an opportunity for Vietnam to leverage and maximize its potential, moving toward a future of sustainable and prosperous development.
